What is glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide i.e. a very tiny protein that included three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. Usually called Mother or Master antioxidant, glutathione raises the utilization and recycling of other antioxidants, specifically vitamins C and E, also alpha-lipoic acid and CoQ10.1

Glutathione is also a necessary component of the body's natural protection system. Viruses, bacteria, large metal toxicity, radiation, specific medicines, and also the usual process of aging can all create free-radical harm to healthy cells and consume glutathione. Glutathione deficiency has been correlated with weaker immune function and increased vulnerability to infection due to the liver's reduced capability to detoxify

The biochemical function of glutathione

Glutathione two separate forms are available, reduced glutathione (GSH, or L-glutathione), which is an active form, and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), the inactive form. Since GSH patrols have the cellular environment and put out oxidative “free radical” flames, it becomes oxidized itself and inactive, therefore transforming into GSSG.

Luckily, inactive GSSG can be regenerated back into an active GSH form, thanks to an enzyme termed glutathione reductase. When the enzyme is defeated and many Oxidized GSSG expands (as compared to the active GSH), body cells become susceptible to harm. As an antioxidant, Glutathione is capable of stopping damage to essential cellular components produced by reactive oxygen varieties like free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides, and abundant metals.

How Glutathione works in the body

Helps To Break Down Nutrients→Regulates our Immune Response→Protects against oxidative stress

What are the roles of glutathione in the human body?

Antioxidant: It is a powerful Antioxidants that protect against the cell damage that free radicals generate, recognized as oxidative stress. Free radicals are waste substances built by cells as the body processes food and responds to the climate. If the body cannot process and exclude free radicals efficiently, oxidative stress can occur. This can harm cells and body capacities. Antioxidants are said to help neutralize free radicals in human bodies and considered to boost overall health.

Regulation: Apart from destroying free radicals and reactive oxidants, glutathione engages in thiol protection and redox regulation of cellular thiol proteins under oxidative stress by protein S-glutathionylation, a redox-regulated post-translational thiol modification. The general reaction includes the formation of an unsymmetrical disulfide from the protectable protein (RSH) and GSH. It maintains exogenous antioxidants i.e. vitamins C and E in their reduced states.

Metabolism & Conjugation: Glutathione conjugation performed a great role in the metabolism of chlorothalonil and subsequent complex metabolic processing of these conjugates occurs in particular renal uptake and urinary excretion of thiol-derived metabolites.

Potential neurotransmitters: As an excitatory neurotransmitter, glutathione depolarizes neurons by acting as ionotropic receptors of its own which are separate from any other excitatory amino acid receptors.

Benefits of Glutathione

  • Reduces oxidative stress
  • Neutralizes free radicals, supports the immune system and detoxifies the body.
  • It also causes skin lightening/whitening by transforming melanin to a lighter color and deactivating the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps to generate the pigment
  • Decreases cell damage in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Enhances insulin resistance in older people
  • Boosts mobility for people with peripheral artery disease
  • May help fight against autoimmune disease
  • May reduce oxidative damage in children with autism, the impact of uncontrolled diabetes, respiratory disease symptoms

Uses of Glutathione

Cosmetics: Glutathione is a very popular agent due to it unique skin whitening properties and taken by mouth in an attempt to whiten the skin. It may also be used as a cream, pills, or IV form.
